Tolerance is a Choice

If you’re concerned that your kids, friends or coworkers see the world in black and white and you’d like to encourage more open-minded attitudes, new research suggests a personal approach.

While you don’t want to condone racist speech or behavior, an authoritative response may backfire, according to a study by researchers at the University of Toronto (see anti-racism campaigns increase bias).

Persuasive efforts that highlight the legal or social consequences of racism may be less effective than a more personal appeal, the study shows. People were more likely to be persuaded by messages that emphasized their own personal stake in tolerant behavior: being open to diversity allows you to learn from others and to enjoy facets of other cultures.

Want to teach your kids that racism is wrong? State your opinion, and describe what you’ve gained from your own open-mindedness. Don’t just fall back on “the rules.” Want to persuade a coworker to give peace a chance? Don’t beat her up about workplace discrimination policies. Emphasize what she stands to gain from a more inclusive attitude.

Bottom line: Increased tolerance of others is more attractive when we choose it, not when it’s mandated. People don’t want to just act good, they want to feel good. Makes sense, right?
