Where is Your BandWagon?

While preparing for an interview with intrigue expert Sam Horn, a Washington, D.C.-based communication consultant, I read a statement that struck me with such force and created such clarity that I just had to share it with you.

It said: “People can’t jump on your bandwagon if it’s in the garage.”

Whether you’re planning the school Thanksgiving Feast, preparing a big project at work, or just driving down the road to your own dreams, everyone needs a bandwagon.

Support from others makes work more fun, lightens the task load and gives us perspective when challenges arise. Bandwagon riders are also great cheerleaders in good times and struggles.

We may not ask for help because we think it will make us look weak. We may expect others to say “no.” Or we may simply get too busy to reach out. It seems like the fastest (easiest) way to accomplish a task is to do it yourself, right?

Wrong.

With practice, you can learn to populate your life with helpful, inspiring comrades.

STEP 1: Go public with information about your next big project. Share your dreams and goals with a few trusted souls. See what happens.

I suspect your enthusiasm will be infectious. It’s time to pull your bandwagon out of the garage and take that baby for a spin.
